GNU Parallel is an excellent way to offload the complexity of parallelizing tasks with optimal efficiency.

Rather than trying to write brittle code with optimal efficiency which may or may not work terribly will in all environments, it would make a lot of sense to offload the task to tools already designed for this purpose, like GNU Parallel or other similar software.
